HISTORY

Woodland Hills is a neighborhood located next to the Santa Monica Mountains in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California, United States.

The area has a rich history, as it was inhabited for approximately 8,000 years by Native Americans of the Fernandeño-Tataviam and Chumash-Venturaño tribes. These communities lived in the Santa Monica Mountains, Simi Hills, and near the Arroyo Calabasas (Calabasas Creek), a tributary of the Los Angeles River, in what we now know as Woodland Hills. The first Europeans to explore the San Fernando Valley were part of the Portola Expedition in 1769. They were on a quest to find suitable locations for Spanish missions and settlements in Alta California. When they saw the area from the present-day Sepulveda Pass, the captivating oak savanna led them to name the region El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bononia de Los Encinos (Valley of St. Catherine of Bononia of the Oaks). In 1797, the Mission San Fernando Rey de España (Mission San Fernando) was established, exerting control over the valley’s land, including the future Woodland Hills.

American ownership of the southern half of the valley, stretching from Toluca Lake to Woodland Hills, began in the 1860s. It started with Isaac Lankershim in 1869, operating under the banner of the “San Fernando Farm Homestead Association.” Subsequently, James Boon Lankershim, Isaac Lankershim’s son, and Isaac Newton Van Nuys took charge in 1873 through the “Los Angeles Farm & Milling Company.” Finally, in 1910, a significant land transaction occurred. This was described as the “biggest land transaction ever recorded in Los Angeles County,” involving a syndicate led by Harry Chandler of the Los Angeles Times, alongside Hobart Johnstone Whitley, Gen. Moses Sherman, and others, collectively forming the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company.
